Hills Ideal Balance Beef and Zucchini

Product Review

Hill's Ideal Balance Crafted Roasted Beef, Peas & Buckwheat Recipe is designed for the maintenance of adult dogs. On the Hill's website, the recommended age group for this product is 1 and 6 years of age. The recipe is not recommended for puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, or dogs over 7 years of age.

There are two ways to obtain AAFCO approval, the most common method is laboratory analysis, the uncommon and more stringent method requires feeding trails. The Hill's Pet Nutrition company has historically gone the extra mile and chosen the latter. With this recipe and many other Ideal Balance dog foods, Hills has chosen to use the former method.

The main source of protein in this recipe is beef and pea protein. The main carbohydrates are peas, barley, and oats.

Availability & Offerings

Ideal Balance is sold by pet stores nationwide and internationally. You can purchase Ideal Balance and other Hill's products at major pet stores, large discount stores, small pet stores, and most online outlets.

Unlike Science Diet and the Hill's Prescription Line of dog food, Ideal Balance is not available from your veterinarian.

Ideal Balance is considered the most "natural" brand in the Hill's portfolio. This means that you will pay more for Ideal Balance than you would for Science Diet. Because Ideal Balance is basically sold everywhere, you can easily find Ideal Balance coupons from pet stores.

The products offered by the Ideal Balance brand include both dry and wet dog food. All products are free of corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and artificial preservatives. These ingredients are included in Science Diet and Hill's Prescription Diet foods, which is why Ideal Balance is considered a more "natural" dog food brand.

Ingredients

The first ingredient in this Ideal Balance recipe is Beef, which is a great first ingredient. The next ingredient is yellow peas, followed by cracked pearled barley, whole grain oats, and pea protein.

It is very clear that this dog food is filled with carbohydrates and cheap fillers. The nutritional information reports 52.6% dry-matter carbohydrates. This is an unacceptable amount of carbohydrates for carnivorous animals.

Most customers are unaware that beef is more than 70% water and ingredients on the label are listed by weight. If you remove the water and rearrange the ingredients, the first ten ingredients in this recipe would be grains and fillers.

Brand Sentiment

Ideal Balance has a positive brand sentiment. This can be attributed to the millions of dollars spent on advertisement. The size of the Hill's Pet Nutrition company allows the marketing team to influence brand perception in a big way.

For example, the Ideal Balance advertisements consistently remark that the brand offers "natural" foods which are perfectly balanced for dogs. Yet, we find products which are filled with grains and an unreasonably high carbohydrate percentage.

My Decision

I would not feed my dogs any Ideal Balance dog food, especially not this recipe. The reason I would not feed this recipe is because of the grains and fillers. I do appreciate the fact that Ideal Balance foods do not contain harmful preservatives and other terrible ingredients, but the amount of carbohydrates in this food is excessive.
